FAVOI CAM
THESIS PROJECT / 2017
Refined version of my thesis project.
I redesigned almost everything such as the logo, icon system, UI, and UX. And finally I got a chance to design the physical body...
SPRING 2017
Re-design
2015-2016 version

Re-designing is painful for
most designers, but not for me.
Every time I looked back and tried
not only to change little things
but to throw away and re-design
most of them, I got better results.

Same thing happened to project FAVOI.
I started by creating my own fonts,
and the icon system, the core app flows
and the major user task flows.
I also redesigned and rendered
the camera body after taking
the industrial design class.
WHAT IS FAVOI?
Long Awaited
Dream Camera
FAVOI is the first camera
that runs a true smart operating system,
designed especially for a camera,
in a thin-light camera body.

Not for phones or tablets.
No calculator, no web browser, no music player,
no amazon app, means that you’ll never
get a change to spend 30 minutes
shopping groceries on your camera,
when you are supposed to
take beautiful photos for your partner
before sunset.
WHAT IS FAVOI?
the Ease-of-Touch
Creativity
FAVOI is the first camera
that all functions are adjustable
ONLY on the touchscreen.

Such as turning on the multi-color
flash lights on one side or both sides,
changing settings of shutter speed,
ISO, aperture, white balance... means
Complicated button combinations
NO MORE!

Well, you do have two physical buttons
on both sides which can be customized
as Home button or Shutter button.
WHAT IS FAVOI?
"Responsive"
FAVOI is the first camera
that responses to your voice,
and rewards your creations.

Activate FAVOI by saying "Hi, FAVOI,"
you can ask your camera to do a self-shot
with your favorite settings,
and send the photo just took to
your friends or family.

You can also sell your photos or videos
with imbedded model releases
right after shooting and editing.
WHY FAVOI?
Introducing
camOS
FAVOI camOS has three major apps:

Camera, for photo/video shooting.
It provides pro adjustments like those
in DSLR cameras, only by tapping
on the touchscreen or talking to it.

Photo Lab provides pro adjustment, Hue, Saturation, even Shape Adjustment,
features that only worked on desktop apps.

Video Tree provides “the Tree”
- a brand new video editing app,
help you to make your video production
a lot easier, and very much organized.
WHY FAVOI?
camOS
And two apps for your creations:

Apps allows you to download third-party apps
to unleash your creativity.

Market gives you the possibility
to sell photos and videos, so that you can
not only share your memories
but get paid from them.
Market also provides a powerful search
function that you can find the memories of
you and your friends by tags, when somehow
you didn’t get the chance to capture them.
So that you will be able to buy photos
and videos with tags like locations, time, colors,
people, buildings, events, and streets, etc.
WHY FAVOI?
camOS
And much more...

The Releases app:

Imbedding Model Release(s) within
the metadata of the photo or video files
makes it possible to sell your creations
on a camera legally and efficiently.

On FAVOI, the whole process becomes
simple and fast.

Here're some demo graphics
for shooting, editing and selling:
HOW FAVOI WORKS?
Attach the lens
Simply attach the lens to the camera body
with three built-in magnet mounts.

You don't have to worry about
the sensor which will be exposed to the air
like in most DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

The lens comes with sensor, battery
and motor. Means it won't
use the battery in the camera body,
which will support one day use of
the touchscreen and flashlights.
HOW FAVOI WORKS?
Camera app
Once assembled,
you can just flip over to the camOS,
tap on the Camera app,
and start shooting.

Shooting with FAVOI Camera app,
you can use PRO mode that allows you
to adjust numbers directly,
if you were familiar with them,
or switch to the
LIVE mode which provides live effect preview
before you press the shutter.
HOW FAVOI WORKS?
Shooting
Editing
Selling
And start shooting...

When you feel like getting a good one,
tap to start editing, and when you
think you are done editing,
sell it just in seconds.

With FAVOI, Everybody could be
a developer for the Market.

(Market is the store for selling and buying
photos and videos on FAVOI camera)

HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The Camera
It all started from 2015.

My very first camera sketches
on an iPad, in Fall 2015.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The Camera
The final industrial design sketch
in Fall 2016, after taking
15 weeks of IND class.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The Camera
The first camera prototype
in Fall 2015, which was actually
a Photoshopped iPhone with a lens.

But the idea of dual flash lights
was solid back then.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The Camera
The final FAVOI camera rendering
in Spring 2017.

With lens off/on the camera,
and the flash lights off.

With lens on the camera,
and the right flash light on PINK.

and the design connection
between the camOS and the camera body.

The very first UI sketch
in Fall 2015.

Photo Lab, Video Tree
and Market.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The camOS
Home screen of the first
UI design in Fall 2015.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The camOS
The second version
in Spring 2016.

Adding a new app Release,
and two third-party apps.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The camOS
The third version
in Spring 2017.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The camOS
The fourth version,
also the final version
in Spring 2017.

Wider, means larger touch screen,
and better consistancy of
the camOS and the camera body.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The camOS
The connnection between
UI design and the camera design.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The Branding
Redesigned logo, started from
designing a new font for "FAVOI".

Firstly, I tried to make letter "F" and "I"
look like a framing hand gesture.
By doing so, I have to get rid of the
middle dash in the letter "F".
It might be a bit confusing at the first look,
but as you get to know about the brand,
it just the way it is.

New icon designs match the shapes
in the logo, keeps the consistancy.
HOW DID I CREATE FAVOI
The Logo
New logo have five meanings:

First, there's a camera circle
stands for the pro lenses;
Second, there are audio and video,
features multi-media types of docs;
Third, Binary code,
means FAVOI is digital;
Fourth, output and input;
Fifth, the Framing gesture.

RESEARCH
DSLRs &
Mirrorless
Big pro cameras,
with big sensors and lenses,
creating high quality photos and videos.
However, they are running
60-years-old operating systems.
Even today.

The embed OS was designed 60 years ago,
and it still dominates the pro camera market.

They are pro, yet heavy,
and complicated, inside out.
RESEARCH
TV Remotes
In early 1980s - 1990s,
TV remotes were packed with buttons.
Does this look familiar
to those pro cameras today?
RESEARCH
"Smart" phones
"Smart" phones back in early 2000s.
Buttons, right?
RESEARCH
Smart phones
Smart phones, today.
They are getting smarter, and prettier.

What happened to the simplicity and
the aesthetics of modern industrial design...

for cameras?
RESEARCH
Accessories
Also, smart phones
and third party manufactures
are trying so hard to produce
"high quality" photos
by using larger sensors,
or fancy accessories.

However, they will not change
the fact that...
RESEARCH
Side by side
Smart phones will never make
high quality photos as DSLRs or Mirrorless.

Here's an example of
two photos, side by side.

Can you tell?
Let's take a closer look.

SOLUTION
The solution
from 2009
High quality photos would never be
made on a PHONE, base on one simple
physics fact: Size of the sensor!

10 years ago, in 2007, there's no such thing
as a smartphone allowing us to do
everything easily, all in one, all together.
10 years ago, first iPhone, or other phones,
they can’t compete with big cameras for sure.

10 years later, even iPhone 7 plus,
shooting portraits with bokeh,
it still can’t compete with any DSLRs
on the market 10 year ago.
SOLUTION

Introducing...
the long awaited dream camera:

FAVOI
BY THE WAY
Great minds
think alike
Just in case.

In case you find this online someday,
and think I copied from it.
NO, I DIDN'T.

I did the UI sketch and design in 2015,
and refined it in spring 2016.
This came out in June, 2016.

I’m not copying from Hasselblad,
it’s copying from me, at least,
GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE.
HOW FAVOI FEELS
Concept Video
Here's the concept video
of FAVOI smart camera.

I used an iPhone to run the demo app
I created myself, for the video shooting.
So if you felt a little bit weird,
or confused, you are good.
